What Is an AI Agent? (And Why It’s Different from ChatGPT)
You’ve probably used ChatGPT. Maybe you’ve asked it to write an email, explain a concept, or help with homework. It’s impressive — but it’s just the beginning.
There’s a next level beyond chatbots, and it’s called AI agents.
The Simple Difference
ChatGPT (and similar chatbots): You ask a question, it gives you an answer. You ask another question, it gives another answer. Every interaction starts from zero.
AI Agent: You give it a goal, and it figures out the steps to get there. It can use tools, make decisions along the way, remember context, and actually complete tasks — not just talk about them.
Think of it like the difference between:
- A consultant who gives you advice (chatbot)
- An employee who actually does the work (agent)
A Real Example
Let’s say you run a guesthouse in Siem Reap.
With a chatbot, you’d ask: “How should I respond to a guest asking about airport pickup?” and it would suggest a response. You’d still need to copy-paste, check availability, maybe message your driver…
With an AI agent, you’d set it up to:
- Monitor your Facebook messages automatically
- When a guest asks about airport pickup → check the driver’s schedule
- If available → confirm and book the pickup, notify the driver, and reply to the guest with pickup details
- If not available → suggest alternatives and let you know
All of that happens without you touching anything. The agent handles the whole workflow.
What Makes an Agent an Agent?
Three key things separate agents from regular chatbots:
1. Tool Use 🛠️
Agents can use tools — browse the web, send emails, update databases, post on social media, read files. They’re not trapped in a chat box.
2. Autonomy 🎯
You give them a goal, not step-by-step instructions. An agent figures out the sequence of actions needed to achieve that goal.
3. Memory 🧠
Agents remember context across interactions. They know your business, your preferences, your customers. They build on past conversations instead of starting fresh every time.
Why This Matters for Cambodian Businesses
Cambodia’s business landscape is unique:
- Facebook is king — most customer interaction happens on Messenger and Facebook comments
- Small teams — many businesses operate with just 2-5 people
- English isn’t universal — but customers expect fast responses
- Mobile-first — everything happens on phones
AI agents are perfect for this environment because they can:
- Handle the Facebook communication load 24/7
- Bridge language gaps (respond in Khmer, English, Chinese)
- Give small teams the capabilities of much larger ones
- Work on mobile-friendly platforms
The Human-AI Team
Here’s the thing we can’t stress enough: AI agents work best with human oversight, not instead of it.
A good setup looks like:
- AI handles the routine (80% of messages, standard inquiries, scheduling)
- AI flags the important/complex stuff for a human
- Human handles the high-value interactions (negotiations, complaints, relationship-building)
- Human reviews and improves the AI’s performance over time
You’re not outsourcing your business to a robot. You’re hiring a tireless assistant who handles the busywork so you can focus on what matters.
Getting Started
If you’re curious about AI agents for your business, here’s our advice:
- Start small. Don’t try to automate everything at once. Pick one repetitive task.
- Measure the impact. How much time does it save? How does customer satisfaction change?
- Iterate. Improve the agent based on real results.
- Keep the human touch. The best AI setups make humans more effective, not less involved.
